Leading by example: Deputy mayor from Wadeye behind bars after smashing work car windows in DVO breach

Deputy Mayor Wilfred Harris of West Daly Regional Council was taken into custody on Saturday after allegedly smashing the windows on a couple of work vehicles, and breaching a non-intoxication DVO involving his wife.

A news tip containing a range of other allegations, including an unpublished investigation by NT Independent on travel expenses were received by this masthead, this morning.

Deputy Mayor Harris was listed to appear before judge Greg MacDonald in Darwin local court this morning on a property damage charge, and engage in conduct that contravenes dvo.

The court had to adjourn his matter to tomorrow morning as it ran out of time to hear his case today.

Waiting all day in court to hear his case today, it's our understanding the five-second adjournment to tomorrow contained the words "guilty plea", although it could have been referencing something else.

West Daly Regional Council was contacted for formal comment, but didn't respond.

Our source said: "He's really fucked it this time.

"Acting CEO has flown in to Wadeye. He'll lose his job with TDC fisheries. Lose his Deputy Mayor position.

"Good bloke when sober tho."
