72-year-old white truck driver on historical ‘sequence’ sexual charges with children linked to Berry Springs bus stop, against three separate victims

A 72-year-old white truck driver has been denied bail at Darwin local court on historical sex charges against three children in separate alleged incidents at a Berry Springs bus stop.

While his adult daughters wept in court, the frail-looking man gestured lovingly, and tried to reassure the women.

The charges relate to alleged offending over a seven-year period.

While details of the case were suppressed, some of the circumstances can be revealed.

Crown prosecutor Craig Laird said the presumption for bail was opposed.

Prosecutor Laird said: "I note there is three separate files with three separate victims.

"In the crown's view, this matter presents a real dangerous risk to children.

"Obviously it's conceded that there's no criminal history.

"I'm instructed by police the defendant has strong community ties, and would have access to children."

"If bail was granted, police say that the defendant should be electronically monitored, and excluded from the Berry Springs Shopping Centre bus stop.

"I will just note again there are three separate victims, and in each case they were on their own.

Judge Alan Woodcock said: "Mr [suppressed] seeks bail. Bail is opposed. There is a presumption against bail.

"He's charged with a sequence of criminal offences. Six offences against children. Over a period of seven years. Three victims.

"The most recent allegation in 2016.

"He's 72. He's got family support. He's a worker.

"But it's my assessment presumption is not overcome. An electronic monitoring device will not meet the concerns of the court.

"I won't order a [bail assessment] report. I remand him in custody."

The defendant's matter was adjourned to the 4th February at 10am for a preliminary examination mention.
