Colourful local identity Benjamin Lang has appeared before Darwin local court this morning where an awkward exchange occurred, resulting with a judge saying he was issuing an arrest warrant.
Lang appeared with a female companion, representing himself on a range of charges.
When his matter was called, Lang stood and appeared to question the authority of the court, but was polite enough to consistently refer to the judge as ‘your honour’.
The judge asked: “Are you hear to deal with these matters or are you not?”
Lang replied: “I’m here acting as Adminstrator for the *inaudible*”
The judge asked: “Why are you in this court?”
“You’re free to go and I will order a warrant for the issue for the address of Benjamin…”
Lang interrupted: “*inaudible*”
“Are you Benjamin Walter Lang or are you not?”
Lang replied: “I don’t go by that name your honour.”
“In that case what business do you have talking to me about the matters of Benjamin Walter Lang?”
Lang replied: “I am here via third party mention.”
The judge instructed his court staff to call for Benjamin Walter Lang in the waiting area.
The judge said: “If he doesn’t attend we’ll order warrants issued.”
Lang replied: “I’m here in regards to that matter your honour.”
The judge asked again in an frustrated voice: “Are you he?”
Lang replied: “I beg your pardon?”
Judge: “Are you that person or are you not? Don’t waste my time any further sir.
“Are you a person before this court with business today sir? Are you Benjamin Walter Lang?”
Lang replied: “I’m not a person your honour.”
On it went before Lang sat down and put his feet up on the seat in front of him, once the judge indicated he had had enough.
Five minutes later he departed the court with his companion, followed by The Mango Inquirer.
He briefly spoke with a legal-looking person in the waiting area, before Mango approached to ask for an interview.
Lang declined, before departing the court house.
It’s unclear at this stage whether the warrant will be followed through with, or Lang will be returning at a later time.
