A local Darwin ice-cream shop with a longstanding policy of standing up to anti-social behaviour in and around it's CBD store, has faced a huge stock-loss, after power was switched off by an unknown group captured on CCTV.
Owner Johnn Koenig wrote on Facebook yesterday: "It appears a group came down West Lane. Opened our power box and turned it off.
"Police are investigating.
"Due to lost stock, we can't open until Friday."
A bewildered selfie of Koenig having a cuppa after the incident accompanied the words: "It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. We will pick ourselves up and keep going through these difficult times together."
Last month Koenig announced the devastating decision to close his store at the end of the dry season, after six and half years of serving gelato in Darwin.
He wrote on Facebook: "The escalating crime and anti-social behaviour over the years have taken a toll.
"Customers and lifelong friends have told me that they refuse to come to the city with their children as it is not safe, and the behaviour that occurs on the streets is disgusting.
"Like many others, I have decided to close down and look to move interstate. Darwin has been my city for 30 years. A city I used to love deeply. However, times have changed, and I have fallen out of love with it.
Johnn John's store operates from a particularly vulnerable spot in Darwin CBD, right next to Tamarind park.
Four days ago, Johnn Johnn's published another anti-social video filmed from his store, showing one man with scissors wrestling with another in the park.
Back in April, before the announcement of a permanent store closure was shared, Koenig wrote on Facebook how an offender who was recently released from prison after attacking him and threatening death, was now sitting next to his shop two days later.
The Mango Inquirer has had a number of videos inboxed over the years involving staff and confrontations on the sidewalk, where a range of issues, sometimes involving alcohol, appeared to unfold.
We approached the owner recently for help putting together a show-reel of the worst incidents over the years. Mango concedes however, the move would've further inflamed the issues his store is facing.
Needless to say, an overwhelming flood of support for Johnn Johnn's on social media may give the owner pause for thought on the closure, as the Darwin community seem to be responding with their feet.
Johnn John's for Darwin City Council?
The standard doesn't appear very high.
